Russian School of Horn Playing

I don't know much about horn playing in Russia, although I'm familiar with Russian music such as Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, to name a few. In July 1999, I received e-mail from Andrey Danilkin, a horn player in Moscow. He wrote that he had been in Yamagata, Japan in 1994 on tour with the Presidential Orchestra. He has a homepage at:

Andrey provides on his web page, both in English and Russian, information on Russian horn players including Ferdinand Eckert, Anton Yusov and Arseny Jankelevich, as well as Polekh and Buyanovsky. I asked him a few questions:

  1. Russian horn players are famous for use of vibrato. Is it tradition or personal thing?
  2. Who is the founder of Russian school of horn playing?
  3. What are popular horns in Russia?

Andrey was kind enough to answer me as follows.

In Russia there were two conservatories. In Moscow and in St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg Conservatory
In 1897 Jan Tamm (1874 - 1933) graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the class of French horn of F. Gomilius. In 1911 Mikhail Buyanovsky, father (1891 - 1966) graduated from the St.Petersburg Conservatory in the class of French horn of Jan Tamm. In 1950 Vitaly Buyanovsky, son (1928 - 1993) graduated from the St.Petersburg Conservatory in the class of French horn of Mikhail Buyanovsky.

Moscow Conservatory
In 1928 Arseny Jankelevich graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory in the class of French horn of Ferdinand Eckert (1865-1941). Anatoly Diomin graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory in the class of French horn of Arseny Jankelevich.

All these musicians have introduced the contribution to creation of Russian school. But a modern embodiment of Russian school of horn playing is Anatoly Diomin. He has the most beautiful sound and perfect engineering. It is possible to name it as the founder of modern school. He studied in St. Petersburg and in Moscow. Now he is old. Plays a little. All students wish to study at him. If you have possibility to hear it play, listen to it necessarily. Anatoly Diomin is legendary French horn player. On an international festival of youth he have presented French horn for a beautiful sound. He played in a State Academic orchestra USSR under management Svetlanov. Svetlanov paid to him the personal salary. It is possible much to tell about him. I shall do about him page hereafter. He is the member of IHS.

Vibrato there is a personal thing, certainly. Everyone can not uniformly play.

In Russia the most popular horns are Holton, Alexander, Hans Hoyer. I have four horns: two Hoyers, Holton 281, Alexander 107N. In Moscow there are not enough of Paxman horns. I know, that in Moscow there are only two Paxman horns.

Andrey Danilkin

St. Petersburg Conservatory

Moscow Conservatory
